YAYO: A lot of people only know you as “Brian” the nerdy Bassist from the tv-show “Gilmore Girls”. But you actually do a lot more than just acting. Can you tell us a bit about your worklife?

JOHN: Sure. Well, it’s very different than it was 4 years ago during the height of the show, that’s for sure. I’ve found my work life shift very far into the area of writing and producing. I guess it started in 2006 when I began pitching a project that I would ultimately sell to Warner Brothers and spend 2 years developing with them. These days I spend a lot of time in front of the computer writing new stuff… or driving to pitch meetings around town. But my work life seems to go in cycles. I remember that the late ninties were similarly a lot of “in house” projects. Then I sort of launched into the field all of a sudden with my directing and acting projects of the last decade.

YAYO: So I understand that you’re quite into the new media. People can follow you on twitter, tumblr, facebook, myspace and of course your own blog. What is it that you like about these kinds of platforms?

JOHN: I like people. And social media makes it easy to meet new ones and connect with old ones in a way that’s not overwhelming… at least not to me. I’d never be able to meet in the real world all the people I’ve connected with online. There wouldn’t be enough time in the day. But online I can skim their thoughts, happenings, hear their suggestions, etc. Which enriches my interaction with them and others in my life. I can also share some of my less private thoughts, I can talk to people during my days of heavy writing, ask questions… try to get them to laugh. All that stuff makes me feel good.

YAYO: Do you see any risks in using them?

JOHN: Sure. Privacy. Maybe security. I definitely think it’s hard to balance being open and transparent with keeping a certain portion of my life… well… just mine. But to be honest most of the folks I’ve connected with are really respectful of that and don’t try to pry or take more. I’ve connected with some really good people.

YAYO: Another celebrity who knows how to use the Internet is Barack Obama. During the election campaign he won a lot of fans and votes through his website. How do you feel about Obama being the new president of the United States of America?

JOHN: It’s crazy, but I’ve really become so apolitical in 2009. Maybe it’s because of Obama, I don’t know. I do know that I wasn’t much of a fan of the policies of the previous administration, and I think that made me much more aware of politics over the last decade. I used to watch Jon Stewart religiously. Scour news sites. But right now, all I know are bits and pieces of the health care debate. I think I got burned out on it. Anyway, Obama… I was excited when he was elected. I had and still have high hopes for him. I think he could be a great president.

YAYO: Have you as an American already expirienced any changes related to the new government yourself?

JOHN: Mmmm. Nothing specific comes to mind. I think change comes much slower than people hope or expect… perhaps more than we were sold during the campaigns. I mean, yes, the country has a different mood now. But big changes are really just a lot of little changes all piled up on each other. I think in 3 years I’ll look back and realize I’m in a changed country. Hopefully for the better.

YAYO: What would you wish to be changed in the future?

JOHN: Well, if we’re still talking about politics, I want a better health care system in this country. And I’d also like to see an end to the culture war, although that’s probably less likely to happen. If we’re talking about the future in general… hmm… I guess I’d love for someone to invent a teleportation machine. I like to travel but I hate flying.

YAYO: Thank you very much for your time! (Next time we’ll talk German…)
